About the Conference:

TAMFT has been dedicated to advancing and promoting marriage and family therapy in Texas for the past 50 years. Not only has TAMFT provided continuing education, shared current research, and facilitated networking opportunities to systemic therapists in Texas, but the professional association also helped protect our right as LMFTs to diagnose in 2017 on the national level. TAMFT has continuously evolved over the years into the thriving independent professional association it is now to best serve systemic therapists and friends of the field.

Celebrating 50 Years of TAMFT: Embracing the Past, Enriching the Present, Empowering the Future is dedicated to the reflection of how far our profession has come and the continued evolution of our innovative field. Keynotes and workshops will honor the foundations of our field, showcase emerging treatments and theories, and inspire critical conversations about the co-creation of the future of marriage and family therapy. Systemic thinkers from Texas and beyond will have the opportunity to gain new skills, share their own research, as well as forge new connections and rekindle professional flames.

Justin Lee has been successfully bridging cultural divides for over 25 years. He first developed his strategic dialogue techniques while working at the difficult intersection of faith and LGBTQ issues, where he became internationally known for helping heal family and community rifts. His book on that subject, Torn, is now one of the most widely read in the field, and an updated and expanded version will be coming out in May of 2024.

Justin’s most recent book, Talking Across the Divide: How to Communicate with People You Disagree With and Maybe Even Change the World, draws on psychological research and real-world examples to apply these same techniques to navigating all sorts of interpersonal conflicts, including political, social, and family divides.

Justin has co-hosted three podcasts, spoken in seven countries, and founded two successful nonprofit organizations. He has been featured in numerous media outlets, including The New York Times, Dr. Phil, Anderson Cooper 360, and All Things Considered; and interviewed by hosts ranging from Bill Maher to Laura Ingraham.

His presentation is titled "Connecting Across the Divide: Navigating disagreements on sexuality, gender, and faith."

Nicole Arzt has been working as a practicing psychotherapist in Southern California for over a decade. In her private practice, she treats complex and developmental trauma with a specialized focus on supporting newer therapists. She's held previous positions in school-based settings, non-profit healthcare, and inpatient mental health and substance use treatment.

Her bestselling book, Sometimes Therapy Is Awkward, explores pertinent themes of imposter syndrome, burnout, and the existential stressors associated with being a modern-day therapist. Her second book, co-authored with her husband and psychotherapist, Jeremy Arzt, is set for publication in late 2024.

Nicole is the founder of Psychotherapy Memes, a global community with more than 150,000 mental health professionals. On social media, she blends humor with authenticity, feeling it is adamant to accurately portray the struggles therapists experience in their daily work.

Nicole also owns Soul of Therapy LLC, a writing and media business for therapists. Her work has been featured in Choosing Therapy, Psychology Today, WebMD, Bustle, and the Today Show. Nicole enjoys consulting and speaking with new therapists about working in mental health.
